What Is Interferential Therapy?

Interferential therapy applies medium frequency currents in a 2 or 4 pole configuration to produce low-frequency stimulation. Normal human skin has relatively high impedance at these frequencies, so traditionally a larger voltage had to be used to achieve the desired current, resulting in a more uncomfortable treatment for the patient. Interferential therapy overcomes the problem of skin impedance by increasing the frequency of the signal from 50Hz to around 4000Hz, and since skin impedance is much lower at this frequency, a much lower voltage signal can be used to acheive the same current, significantly reducing discomfort.

This frequency is, however, much too high to produce a stimulation effect in biological material (it should be between 0.1Hz and 250Hz). To produce the desired effect, two medium frequency signals are used, such as 4000Hz and 3900Hz. These two frequencies ‘interfere’ with one another and it is the difference between these two frequencies (amplitude modulation frequency) which produced the stimulation effect required for interferetial therapy.
